We’ve spoken about the importance of the low-pass filter in front of our audio-controlled oscillator (ACO). Without tuning the low-pass filter (LPF) to the correct cutoff frequency, the second or third harmonic (or higher) can be stronger than the fundamental component in a musical signal and this can confuse the frequency tracking circuit in the ACO, causing it to track to harmonics instead of the fundamental.
